Tip of the month

Every month, we share an expert tip on mentoring from one of the Moving Ahead team or faculty members.

This month, creative problem solving expert and Moving Ahead Ambassador, Kirk Vallis, shares the idea of everyday mentoring moments.

“Formal mentoring structures are vital for giving people the permission to seek out new perspectives. But we can also benefit from informal mentoring moments every single day.

In this dynamic, I’m not confined to the role of mentor or mentee – I can be both. Whenever I come up against a challenge where I would benefit from fresh eyes, I can play the role of a mentee just by seeking input from others around me.

The same is true vice versa; when someone approaches me for advice, that’s a mentoring moment. An opportunity for me to make suggestions based on my experience that may unlock something for others.

The key is to embrace both formal programmes and everyday mentoring moments as chances to grow. Shift your mindset to see every interaction as a learning opportunity.”
